With its expressive characters and aesthetic inspired by 1930s cartoons, Cuphead has left its mark on an entire generation of gamers. But behind its unique visual identity lies Rubber Hose Animation, an artistic style that emerged nearly a century ago.
From the early black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoons to the games developed today by Hacksaw Gaming, here’s a look back at the history of an artistic movement that continues to captivate creators and gamers alike.
Rubber Hose Animation is one of the earliest animation styles used in the history of cartoons.
Its name comes from the way the characters were depicted. Their arms and legs resembled rubber hoses, with no visible joints. This technique allowed animators to create fluid, exaggerated movements that were particularly fun to watch.
At the time, animation tools were much more limited than they are today. Rubber Hose Animation thus offered a simple solution for bringing characters to life while maintaining a dynamic look.
This style quickly became the standard in cartoons of the 1920s and 1930s. Even nearly a century later, it remains easily recognizable thanks to its supple movements, exaggerated expressions, and unique retro charm.
When discussing Rubber Hose Animation, Mickey Mouse is often the first character that comes to mind.
In his early appearances, particularly in the famous short film Steamboat Willie released in 1928, Disney’s iconic mouse fully embraced the conventions of this visual style. The characters move through a black-and-white world where their movements are deliberately exaggerated and full of energy.
Mickey Mouse, however, is not the only representative of the genre. Other iconic characters, such as Betty Boop and Popeye, also helped popularize this aesthetic, which would become one of the hallmarks of vintage cartoons.
Over time, animation evolved toward more detailed and realistic styles. Yet the influence of Rubber Hose never completely faded. Its visual identity remains etched in the history of animation and continues to inspire many artists.
For a long time, Rubber Hose Animation remained a style appreciated mainly by animation enthusiasts. Then Cuphead arrived.
Developed by Studio MDHR, the video game took the bold gamble of recreating the look of 1930s cartoons. The characters were hand-drawn, the backgrounds painted in watercolor, and the animations designed to faithfully capture the spirit of cartoons from that era.
The result immediately captivated players around the world.
Beyond its challenging gameplay, Cuphead quickly became an artistic benchmark. Its success introduced an entire new generation to Rubber Hose Animation and the charm of vintage cartoons.
Few video games can claim to have brought an almost century-old artistic movement back into the spotlight. Yet that is exactly what Cuphead achieved.
Cuphead’s success demonstrated that there is still genuine interest in retro worlds and original visual styles.
In the world of online slots, visual identity plays a crucial role. Players often form an impression of a game in just a few seconds. Developers must therefore create worlds capable of immediately capturing players’ attention.
This is one of the reasons why studios like Hacksaw Gaming place such importance on their characters, animations, and art direction.
Even when the themes are very different, there’s often this desire to create memorable worlds full of personality - a principle that evokes the spirit of early cartoons.
The influence of vintage cartoons isn’t necessarily seen through a direct copy of Rubber Hose Animation. Rather, it’s evident in the way certain developers bring their characters to life and build their visual worlds.
On PASINO.ch, several Hacksaw games rank among the titles most loved by players.
In The Bandit, Hacksaw Gaming features Smokey, a burglar raccoon, in a world inspired by 1940s crime films. Its retro cartoon aesthetic, expressive characters, and humorous animations evoke the spirit of the cartoons that popularized Rubber Hose Animation.
Thanks to its unique visual identity and modern mechanics, The Bandit is one of the Hacksaw games most loved by players on PASINO.ch.
With Zeus, Hacksaw reimagines Greek mythology in a dynamic and accessible world.
The king of the gods naturally takes center stage, surrounded by animations and visual effects that bring the whole experience to life. This approach modernizes a theme that is otherwise very classic in the world of slot machines.
Thanks to its bold visual style and carefully crafted atmosphere, Le Zeus has established itself as one of the provider’s most popular titles.
The Pharaoh takes players to the heart of ancient Egypt in search of treasures and mysteries.
The game features meticulous art direction that highlights the iconic symbols of this fascinating civilization. The animations enhance immersion and help create a unique atmosphere.
Like The Bandit and The Zeus, The Pharaoh perfectly illustrates Hacksaw’s ability to create visually striking worlds that linger in the memory long after the game is over.
If Rubber Hose Animation still fascinates today, it’s because it possesses an instantly recognizable visual identity.
At a time when many games strive for ever-greater realism, this style offers a completely different approach. Its simple shapes, exaggerated movements, and retro look give it a special charm.
For some, it evokes the early Mickey Mouse cartoons. For others, it immediately brings to mind Cuphead and its unique world. In any case, it continues to spark curiosity and attract new audiences.
Who are the most famous characters in Rubber Hose Animation?
Among the most iconic characters are the early versions of Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop, and Popeye. These heroes played a major role in popularizing this animation style with the general public during the 1920s and 1930s.
Why is Rubber Hose Animation considered revolutionary?
In its day, this style allowed animators to create movements that were more fluid and dynamic than ever before. It also helped lay the groundwork for many animation techniques still studied today.
Why don’t Rubber Hose Animation characters have visible joints?
This feature allowed animators to simplify their work while creating fluid movements.
Arms and legs could thus bend freely, giving rise to the distinctive aesthetic of this animation style.
Why do vintage cartoons continue to captivate audiences?
Vintage cartoons have a unique visual identity that transcends generations. Their retro style, visual humor, and expressive characters continue to spark curiosity among animation enthusiasts and gamers alike.
Born in the 1920s, popularized by the first cartoons featuring Mickey Mouse, and then brought back into the spotlight thanks to Cuphead, Rubber Hose Animation has spanned generations without ever losing its appeal.
Today, its influence extends far beyond the world of cartoons. Video games, artistic creations, and even some modern slot machines continue to borrow its visual elements to create original and memorable experiences.
Through their meticulously crafted worlds, expressive characters, and polished animations, studios like Hacksaw Gaming demonstrate that this legacy remains more alive than ever.
